Review: Flowerchildren (Comedy Theatre, Melbourne)

Let your hair down, pull out the crocheted vest, and be sure to wear some flowers in your hair!

Flowerchildren is a triumph with glorious singing, wonderful writing, and eye-catching visuals. Peter Fitzpatrick’s musical about 1960’s musical sensation The Mamas and The Papas, is an original delight. Read my review on Stage Whispers here.

Hot Stuff at Techie Mecca

Setting off for Techie Mecca, I attempted to blend in by wearing a black shirt. But it was hopeless. Without the obligatory belted jeans and black backpack it was obvious I was outside my comfort zone.

On display at the annual ENTECH expo in Melbourne this year were the latest and greatest the sound and light industry innovators have on offer, from staging and cases, lights and audio, electric drum kits and screen ear monitors.

Sure if you want the biggest and brightest you’ll need to be prepared to part with big bucks, but the amateur and school production companies were not completely forgotten in the throng.

Review: Annie at The Regent, Melbourne

Playing to an audience, with all the generations covered, highlights were aplenty at Melbourne’s Annie opening at The Regent tonight (29^th May).

Everything a musical theatre lover demands was in evidence including super tight singing, creative choreography, well-executed dance, eye-catching costuming and effective set design.

The cast were exuberant - there was clearly no place they’d rather be.

Musical highlights included Hard-Knock Life by eight supremely talented orphans and Easy Street with three stars at the top of their game: Nancye Hayes (Miss Hannigan) Todd McKenney (Rooster) and the most amazingly leggy Chloe Dallimore (Lily St Regis). Continue reading

Moonshadow, a musical featuring the music of Yusef Islam (formally Cat Stevens) is set to cast its magic across Melbourne with its world premiere on 31st May. With over 30 hit songs as well as new material, Moonsahdow is a tale of universal themes, told in a fantasy setting.

I met up with two of the stars at the Princess Theatre yesterday. They won me over with their delight in working directly with Yusef, and their enthusiasm for the beautiful songs.
